First, it's important to understand the advantages and trade-offs with each lens, as explained here.
Lenses mentioned:
- Canon EF 85mm f/1.8 USM - fast prime lens for shallow depth of field
- Canon EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS USM - a favorite general zoom lens, just a little short at the tele end. For example, this pro says that the EF-S 17-55mm is used for 70% of his shots.
- Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L USM - another favorite general zoom lens which works well on full-frame Canon cameras, but with no Image Stabilization
- Canon EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM - yet another favorite, especially on full-frame cameras, offering a large zoom range with Image Stabilization. Read this post for more information.
- Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM, Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS USM - these telephoto zoom lenses are great for tight portraits or shooting far-away subjects; more information in this post.
